Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus
Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus
Scripture: Luke 2:21-35
During Advent, we’re reminded that every person carries deep longings for restoration, healing, and fulfillment. While our culture promises satisfaction through material success and achievements, these temporal solutions inevitably leave us empty because we’re trying to satisfy eternal longings with temporary things. The story of Simeon in Luke 2 shows us a man who waited faithfully for the Messiah and found his deepest hopes fulfilled when he held baby Jesus. Jesus came not as a king among the elite, but as an ordinary child to working-class parents, identifying with all humanity. Only Jesus can satisfy our deepest longings because he offers eternal hope rather than temporary fixes. When we embrace the gospel story instead of the world’s promises, our frustrations become invitations to find our rest in Christ, and we become people who can extend this same hope to others.
