Jesus calls us to radical truthfulness in a world where people manipulate words to avoid responsibility. In Matthew 5:33-37, He teaches that everything exists in God’s presence, making all our words sacred. Rather than elaborate oath-making systems, Jesus wants us to be people whose simple yes or no carries weight because our character is trustworthy. This means aligning our inner and outer lives completely – being the same person in every room we enter. True freedom comes not from removing constraints, but from having our lives match so completely that we don’t need to remember which version of ourselves we’re supposed to be.
